Nerdcore: Hip-Hop for SciFri Fans

This Friday, we’ll talk with MC Frontalot, the self-proclaimed “world’s 579th greatest rapper.”

If you like hip-hop, and you love all things geek (like we do), one of our segments this week might be music to your ears. It’s all about nerdcore—a genre of hip-hop, coined by rapper MC Frontalot, that embraces and expounds upon the nerdlife, from computer programming to video games to science in general.

If it sounds unlikely, it’s not unliked!—nerdcore has garnered a following. For example, MC Frontalot will perform at this year’s SXSW music festival in Austin, TX, and the genre has inspired a feature-length documentary called Nerdcore Rising.

Our managing editor of video, Flora Lichtman, stopped by MC Frontalot’s Brooklyn apartment to see where the magic happens and to chat with Frontalot about the intersection of nerd and rap. For a sneak peek, check out one of Nerdcore’s videos, below.

MC Frontalot will also join Flora and Ira in the studio on Friday. You can listen in at your local public radio station, starting around 2:40 p.m. EST.
