Justin Muir designs upscale fish tanks ($50,000-$100,000, on average) for the fish-loving rich and famous. (More on that here.) To populate his client’s tanks, Muir raises some sea creatures in a warehouse in Brooklyn. The giant clams (Tridacna gigas) in this video are sold, and went for $500 apiece, which is nothing compared to Muir’s biggest clam deal.
Like most New Yorkers, these giant clams hail from somewhere else. They’re indigenous to the South Pacific and Indian Ocean, usually found among shallow reefs. There have been no substantiated reports of (human) death by giant clam, National Geographic reports.
