I just got a call back from the dealer which was referred to me by the Ford website when I inquired about the Transit Connect Electric. This time I spoke with somebody in the loop. Here’s the bottom line-
The Ford dealer buys the vehicle shell from the mother ship. They send it out to Azure Dynamics to have it fitted with the electric power train so that they can deliver a single vehicle at a cost of about $47,000 — more than twice the cost of a gasoline-powered Transit Connect. It’s gonna take quite a lot of gasoline savings to pay that off….. Let’s hope that the electric Ford Focus hits a little closer to the affordability mark.
While they have a fleet order in the works, they haven’t actually sold or built any Transit Connect Electrics, yet, and at these prices they’re not expecting any retail orders.
