A Fan Lashes Out

Dear Dr. Walavalkar:

You had us at “I etch things into eyelashes.” But this, well…let’s just say we’re big fans of yours too.
 
In his day job, Sameer Walavalkar is an applied physicist at Caltech, where he builds nano-sized silicon structures for use in electronics and medical devices. But at heart, he’s an artist. Walavalkar uses a dual-beam focused ion beam to create what he calls “nano-compositions” such as the one pictured at left. (Yes, that really is an eyelash.) You can see some samples of his work in the video below.
