A prototype wave energy device is floating in Puget Sound and is exceeding expectations, so — and this is very encouraging — investors are really starting to back it.

Columbia Power Technologies says its SeaRay devices, which use a “heave and surge” energy capture design, pull twice the energy from ocean waves as other technologies, and could be produced to provide energy on a megawatt-scale worldwide. They say there’s $900 billion of energy that can be pulled from the ocean annually — enough to power 600 million homes.
