Get excited: on this week’s show, musician Thomas Dolby — the man behind the inarguably awesome song “She Blinded Me With Science” — joins us to talk about music and technology.
After becoming an MTV star in the ’80s (and jumpstarting the retrofuturist cultural movement called steampunk), Dolby left the music world for Silicon Valley. He started a company, Beatnik, that pioneered polyphonic cellphone ringtones, so you have him to thank for that ubiquitous Nokia tone.
After almost 20 years out of the limelight, Dolby is releasing new music this year. Two new EPs are already out, and a full-length album is due later this summer. Tune in this week as we talk to him about music, tech, and the wind- and solar-powered lifeboat he uses as a recording studio.
To set the mood, watch these music videos. Here’s the classic:
And here’s one of his new songs, off the EP Amerikana. Different sound, same charming weirdness.
