The Buzz on Flies

Temperatures are warming up all over the country, and this means that we're going to be hearing a lot of questions about mosquitoes, gnats, and midges. What's the best repellant? How can we avoid them? Can I get sick from a mosquito bite?
 
These are valid questions and concerns. Because of the few types of flies that are pests or disease vectors, however, the diversity of the order Diptera is often overlooked. 
 
When we created our Diptera video for Texas A&M Unversity's Department of Entomology, we tried to highlight as much diversity in fly form and ecological role as possible. Flies are truly fascinating animals. Some affect humans in devastating ways, to be sure, but we feel it's important to look at the order as a whole to fully appreciate flies' role in our world.
