Whale Bubble-netting

by Leslie Taylor

Video by Science Friday, edited by Annette Heist

In this video, David Wiley, research coordinator for Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, talks about his research on Humpback whale behavior. Using digital tracking tags, Wiley was able to visualize what the whales are doing underwater when they're bubble-netting -- a hunting behavior in which Humpback whales blow a loop of bubbles to round up and concentrate fish into a convenient gulp-size area.
