Meet Ina Vandebroek, Ethnobotanist and Salsa Dancer

by The Secret Life of Scientists

As an ethnobotanist, Ina Vandebroek studies the relationship between people and plants, traveling the world to see how local cultures use bontanicals for healing. While life in the field taps into the part of Ina's personality that is neutral, critical, and analytical, her "secret" life as a salsa dancer taps into her emotional side. "You're no longer a researcher," Ina told us of her time on the dance floor. "You're a woman." In the videos below, Ina describes her work in just 30 seconds, then answers 10 questions about medicinal plants, her favorite Salsa step, and why she sees herself as more of a Spock than a Captain Kirk. Learn more about Ina on her Secret Life homepage
