Dr. Sally Kristen Ride died last month at age 61, of pancreatic cancer. In 1983, Ride broke the NASA gender barrier and became America's first female astronaut. While aboard the Challenger shuttle, Ride used a robotic arm she helped design to retrieve a satellite.

In 2003 Science Friday spoke with Ride about the future of space flight, returning to the Moon, and science education.
