As a child, Mireya Mayor drove her overprotective mother nuts. Though she wore frilly, "girly girl" dresses, Mireya was also an adventurous kid who loved climbing trees and leaping off rooftops. Forbidden to join Girl Scouts as a kid—her mom thought it was "far too dangerous"—Mireya went on to become a primatologist, Fulbright Scholar, and National Geographic correspondent. In her work, she's been attacked by a silverback gorilla, chased by elephants, and involved in a plane crash (perhaps it's no wonder she's known as the female Indiana Jones). Oh, and she also cheered professionally for the NFL's Miami Dolphins.
In the video below, Mireya tells us about falling in love with lemurs, how cheerleading is like field work, and how her mother seems to have accepted her wild life. Learn more about Mireya on her Secret Life homepage.
