This week on Science Friday, we’ll be talking with Michael Sims, author of the new book, The Story of Charlotte’s Web: E. B. White’s Eccentric Life in Nature and the Birth of an American Classic.

The story behind that iconic tale starts with E. B. White’s lonely childhood in rural Maine and Mount Vernon, New York, where he – not unlike Fern – developed friendships with animals. White later wrote that he “felt for animals a kinship he never felt for people.” Charlotte’s Web was not purely fantasy; it was based in part on his own study and love of the natural world.
