I’m reading a really scary book. “Charlotte’s Web.” All this talk about murder, killing, eating the dead. Any book who’s opening line is “Where’s Papa going with the axe?” sounds more like a Hitchcock psycho mystery than a kid’s book.
It’s one of the most popular books in the world. But I escaped reading it, somehow. Maybe too many geek books. But the author of “The Story of Charlotte’s Web,” Michael Sims, joins us on Science Friday to talk about how E.B. White wrote about the things he knew and he lived among the characters in the book, all based on real life animals. Though I’m not sure if it’s documented that they talked to him.
On the positive side, the animal quackers in the book are not afraid to talk to kids about the reality of nature, and the web of life. It’s a good lesson. Be sure to check it out.
