Maker Faire in NY

It was the “most unique” event in NY City this weekend: Maker Faire. Thousands of hobbyists, inventors, life-long-learners came to Queens at the old World’s Fair grounds to oogle at the uncountable number of ingenious robots, gadgets and wearable electronics that covered the NY Hall of Science parking lots.

I was there, too, manning our Science Friday sponsored tables and our unique TalkingScience Cabaret “Battle of The Bands”.

A great time was had by all! The only thing more fantastic than the turn-out was the paucity of press coverage about the fair. None of the giant broadcast news channels in NY made any mention of the faire. Yes, they talked about the church dinners and other social events around town. But Maker Faire? That was left to a few web sites and to the Maker Faire folks, themselves.

It’s another reason why these media have failed so badly at promoting science education. And an illustration about how social networks are taking over. But kids of all ages turned up and you can watch a slide show of our Talking Science Cabaret to catch up on some of the events you missed.
