We can all take steps to cumulatively reduce our society’s use of fossil fuels. Energy efficient light bulbs, recycling, and taking public transportation to name a few. Saying these efforts don’t matter is like saying your vote doesn’t count — the sentiment is understandable but untrue. People can say the same thing about voting, but we occasionally have very close elections don’t we?
According to the EPA
, if an office building of 7,000 workers were to recycle their paper for a 12 months, the ultimate reduction in greenhouse gas emissions would be equivalent to taking 400 cars off the road that year. I’ve also previously discussed
research showing that halving the amount of food waste in the U.S. would save enough energy to run a small country — literally!
Another way everyday folks can make difference is by becoming part of something bigger. Below is a list (by no means complete) of notable organizations that are doing some exciting things in the fight against climate change.
