Chilean Fjords
by Milbry Polk
I have just finished a most wonderful excursion through a wilder part of the world, nearly devoid of human activity; a place of great beauty and one of titanic geologic force. We left Ushuaia, Argentina in a hail of rainbows, forged through storms, and sailed across glistening still waters, swept past towering volcanoes, and got up close to enormous glaciers for two weeks, until we reached Valparaiso, Chile.

Constanza Ceruti’s Ascent of Osorno
by Milbry Polk
Leaving Santiago, Constanza Ceruti and I flew to Puerto Montt where we had been invited to the lake home of publisher, artist, and philanthropist Roberto Edwards. Constanza -- a high altitude archaeologist and alpinist -- and I journeyed here so she could climb the volcano Osorno. From Puerto Montt we drove towards Osorno, which at 2661 meters, towers over the region.

Captain Dag Saevik, The World
by Milbry Polk

"I was always thinking about working on ships and in 1979 I decided to go to sea,“ said Captain Saevik. He began his career as an electrician and then went to sea as a deckhand to see if liked that life. He did, so applied and was accepted at the Maritime Academy in Tonsberg, Norway. It took him eleven years of study, and working his way up the ladder, to eventually become a captain. He joined the ship, The World, when it was being built nine years ago.

Constanza Ceruti, High Altitude Archaeologist
by Milbry Polk
Constanza Ceruti is an Argentinean archaeologist who studies ceremonial sites associated with mountains around the world. I have climbed over 100 mountains -- many of them solo -- to survey the peaks. I have found that nearly every mountain has meaning given to it by the local people. In collaboration with other archaeologists, I discovered several mummies of children who were offered as a sacrifice to the mountain deities in Argentina during the time of the Incan Empire.

Tips for Visiting Volcanoes
by Milbry Polk

We are sailing on The World in a region known for volcanoes. Catherine Hickson is a Canadian geologist who works with geothermal energy from volcanoes. She studied at the University of British Columbia, where she began working with the Geological Survey of Canada. One of her tasks was to make regional maps and detailed studies of volcanoes. This was a huge task as there are over 200 young volcanoes in British Columbia, where she was posted, most of which are in remote areas.

Exploring Usuaia
by Milbry Polk
I am staying in a hotel perched high on the mountain that gives me a commanding view of the port and the Beagle Channel. Snow-covered mountains, the Patagonian Andes, cascade into the sea around us. Small islands dot the distance in either direction. South lies Antarctica.
