> June 27, 1997 The Roswell Mystery: Something happened 50 years ago near Roswell, New Mexico. What, exactly, happened is still a matter of controversy.. Fifty years ago, on a ranch just outside Roswell, New Mexico, some strange silver-colored wreckage was found. Hours after that, the nearby Roswell Army Air Force base issued a statement saying that a flying disk had crashed. That statement was quickly recanted. The new Air Force position on the wreckage was that an experimental weather baloon had crashed. Since then, the U.S. Air Force has changed its story several times. First, the weather balloon. Then in 1994, they released a follow-up report that said that the wreckage was actually part of a secret program to monitor Soviet atomic tests. And this week, the Air Force has issued yet another report, entitiled "The Roswell Report: Case Closed." The report argues that reports of UFO crashes, alien corpses, and government coverups are the results of the mistaken memories of many people, collected over a period of years. Some people don't believe the Air Force's later statement, choosing to believe that there actually was a flying disk that crashed near the base and that the government is trying to cover up the facts.Others argue that there might not be aliens in New Mexico, but that the government's story just doesn't ring true. And some feel that what the Air Force says was a fancy ballooon with secret sensors was... a fancy balloon with secret sensors. Tune in, and we'll try to get to the bottom of the mystery!
