> December 3, 1999: Hour Two: Science Policy Roundtable: Rita Colwell and Harold Varmus
On this hour of Science Friday, join guest host Joe Palca for a conversation with two of the biggest names in science research - Rita Colwell, director of the National Science Foundation, and Harold Varmus, director of the National Institutes of Health. Together, they oversee thousands of research projects and the distribution of almost $20 billion in grant money.
| The projects that the NIH and NSF choose to support influence, to a large degree, the direction that scientific research will go in the U.S. They support basic research into physics, chemistry, and biology. Many science education efforts (including Science Friday), receive money from the NSF. NIH decisions on issues like the use of embryonic stem cells in research can have a wide-ranging effect in the scientific community. And the NIH's own research labs cover a huge amount of ground, from the Human Genome Project to cancer research. | | What gets support? Why? And where do these leaders see science going in the year 2000 and beyond? We'll talk about it on this hour of Science Friday.
