Hour Two:
Earth Odyssey

Eight years ago, writer Mark Hertsgaard set out to take a look at the world's environment. But he chose to do it not by going to the most beautiful, unspoiled wildernesses on the planet, but by going to some of the places that have been the most spoiled. He visited lands that have been ravaged by war, diseases, poverty, and famine. He visited areas that have been laid waste by indiscriminate pollution. And he tried to use his travels to theorize about what the world might be like in the future.

Along the way through the nineteen countries that he visits, including China, the former Soviet Union, and the Sudan, Hertsgaard talked to the people that he met about what they thought of the environment around them, and about what they thought it would take to improve their situation. War, weapons production, and the endless desire for consumer goods were often cited as a large part of the problem. Hertsgaard says that one of the largest environmental concerns worldwide should be dealing with poverty - because if people are hungry, they're not going to care about saving trees or preventing holes in the ozone layer until they're fed.

On this hour of Science Friday, we'll talk to author Mark Hertsgaard about his travels, and about the state of the environment today and in the future.
