| Author John McPhee has been called one of the best non-fiction writers in America. While he has written about many different topics during his career, he is perhaps best known for his books on the geology of North America, including Basin and Range (1981), In Suspect Terrain (1983), Rising from the Plains (1986), and Assembling California (1993). His latest book, Annals of the Former World, collects those four books together in one volume and adds a fifth - Crossing the Craton. As told though his Pulitzer-prize-winning prose, McPhee takes the reader across the country on Interstate 80, accompanied by geologists who help explain the structure and formation of the rock structures that make up the continent.
On this hour of Science Friday, we'll be talking with author John McPhee about his work - and about the challenge of explaining a rather dusty science to a general audience. | |
