Hour Two: A Conversation with Bob Ballard

Underwater explorer Robert Ballard led the expedition that discovered what has been called the most profound oceanographic find of the 20th century -- deep sea hydrothermal vents and the exotic creatures that inhabit them. While Ballard has also explored the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and discovered some of the world’s oldest shipwrecks, he is probably best known for raising the wreck of the Titanic.

As the world’s pre-eminent oceanographer, Ballard was recently named National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence. Ballard says his relationship with National Geographic will pay off in two expeditions planned for this summer, one to the Black Sea, and the second to Antarctica-to search for Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, The Endurance. In this hour of Science Friday we’ll talk with Bob Ballard about his oceanographc exploits past and present, and about his new book, “The Eternal Darkness: a Personal History of Deep-Sea Exploration.”
