Hour One: St. Paul, MN
Remote: Bioethics
|
In the post-genetic-revolution world, discoveries can move from
the test tube to our everyday lives with astounding speed. Just
a few years ago, ideas like cloning, gene therapy, and stem cell
transplants were just science fiction.
|
|
But now embryos as little as three days old can be tested for genetic
defects. Just last month, parents gave birth to a child so that they
could use stem cells from his umbilical cord to treat their other daughter
for a rare, life-threatening condition.
These advanced technologies are now real, and we are faced with real
ethical choices about how to use them.
This hour, we're broadcasting live from St. Paul, Minnesota as the
guests of Minnesota Public Radio.
We'll talk about bioethics. What is it? Who studies it? And can the
ideas developed by bioethicists help us to navigate through the brave
new world of biotechnology?
