Hour One: AAAS Remote: San Francisco: Future of Drug Development

Now that the first reports from the sequencing of the human genome have been published, where do we go from here?

Researchers around the world are working to take what has been learned from genomics research and move it to the next step, applying the research to real-world issues such as drug development. This targeted drug design - moving from gene sequences to proteins to actual drugs - is the focus of many pharmaceutical research efforts.

At a certain level, it's just a problem of data analysis - sifting through the database of about 30,000 genes looking for ones that might be of use. But the mechanics of finding ways to do that sifting efficiently are complex. In this hour of Science Friday, live from San Francisco, we'll be talking about how pharmaceutical researchers hope to move from gene sequence to drug. Some researchers even say that down the road, it will be possible to create 'personalized' medications - drugs specifically targeted to work with your personal genetic makeup. Sound like science fiction? Call in with your thoughts and comments at 1-800-989-8255, and share your opinions online in our Listeners' Lounge (registration required)
