Hour One: AIDS Update
/ Malaria
Globally, malaria infects nearly three hundred million people a year,
causing over a million deaths -- a statistic that remains stubbornly
high in spite of years of research. In this hour of Science Friday,
we'll take a look at the ways scientists are trying to control the
disease. Are we any closer to a vaccine? Will unraveling the genome
of the mosquito carrier provide any answers?
We'll also talk about another global helath threat -- HIV/AIDS. The
14th International AIDS Conference is getting underway in Barcelona
this weekend. We'll find out about a new study looking at the potential
effects of implementing a comprehensive package of prevention methods,
from education to condom distribution, on the future of the HIV/AIDS
epidemic. Through a concerted worldwide effort now, the study's authors
say, some 29 million infections could be prevented over the next 8
years. We'll find out more. Call in with your comments and questions
at 1-800-989-8255, and share your opinions online in our Listeners'
Lounge (registration
