Science Friday > Archives > 2002 > March > March 8, 2002: Hour One: Bubble Fusion / Anthrax Update Research published this week by the journal Science is causing a stir in the physics community. The paper, written by scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, presents evidence for nuclear fusion -- not in a huge, multi-million-dollar facility, but in tiny bubbles produced by sounds waves bombarding liquid in a beaker. The scientists claim that as those bubbles collapse, producing a brief burst of light, that they see evidence for the production of neutrons -- a sign of nuclear fusion taking place. Other scientists aren't so sure, however, saying that follow-up tests by another group did not seem to produce neutrons -- and questioning the journal's decision to publish the work. In this hour, we'll take a look at the science and politics surrounding the controversy. Then, we'll look back on what the scientific and medical communities
have learned about anthrax in the months since the terrorist attacks.
Investigators say that they are narrowing the focus of their hunt for
the person or group responsible for the anthrax-contaminated mailings.
We'll hear about the science involved in the hunt, as well as efforts
to develop more effective vaccines and treatments for anthrax. Call in with your comments and questions at 1-800-989-8255, and share your opinions online in our Listeners' Lounge (registration required).
