Ruppel Shell's The Hungry Gene
Ellen Ruppel Shell's new book, The Hungry Gene: The Science of
Fat and the Future of Thin, addresses how and why over 1.1 billion
people worldwide are now overweight or obese. The book explores the
roles of genetics, pharmaceutical companies, the food industry, and
social class in the increasing number of people overweight.
In this hour of Science Friday, we'll talk to Ellen Ruppel Shell
and obesity experts, Dr. Jeffrey Flier and Dr. Robert Murray, about
the causes, complications, and possible solutions to this epidemic
of fatness.
