Hour One: Gene Therapy
/ Open Source Software
This week the FDA put several gene therapy trials on hold, following
the announcement that two participants in similar trials had developed
leukemia. In this hour of Science Friday, Ira and guests discuss the
status of gene therapy research.
Plus, we'll be taking a look at the philosophy -- and business --
of open source software. "Open source" means that the source
code behind a program must be available so that programmers can study,
tinker with, and build upon it. It's a popular approach -- over sixty
percent of web sites use Apache, an open source web server. Operating
system distributions such as Red Hat Linux follow the open source
method. We'll talk with Bruce Perens, a leader in the open source
movement, about the ideas of open source and how they're put into
practice.
