Hour Two: Health
of the Oceans
A new report released this week by the Pew Ocean Commission says
that unless we change the way we manage both our oceans and the fish
within, the ocean ecosystems are in danger of collapse. The report
follows on the heels of a letter released last month in the journal
Nature claiming that stocks of large fish such as tuna, cod, and halibut
are only a fraction of their pre-industrial levels.
In this hour of Science Friday, we'll talk about assessing the health
of the oceans. How easy is it to understand the behavior of such a
complex environment? We'll talk about various proposals to change
the way marine resources are managed, and whether such changes are
necessary. Call in with your questions and comments at 1-800-989-8255,
and share your opinions online in our Listeners' Lounge (registration required).
