Hour Two: Heart
Surgery Pioneer Michael DeBakey
World-renowned heart surgeon Michael DeBakey turned ninety-five
this year. DeBakey is credited with developing the concept of the
military MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) units, as well as
developing many of the techniques and procedures now common in modern
heart surgery. He developed the Dacron grafts used for to patch
weak areas of the cardiovascular system, created the Ventricular
Assist Device to aid patients awaiting heart transplants, and performed
the world's first aortocoronary artery bypass (in 1964). In this
hour of Science Friday, we'll talk with Dr. DeBakey about his life
in medicine.
Please note that this program is a holiday rebroadcast of our September
