Hour One: Arctic Ice / Climate Change

Scientists met this week in Seattle to talk ice -- and its role in the larger Arctic ecosystem. New research suggests that the Arctic ice has thinned dramatically, but what does that mean? In this hour of Science Friday, Ira and guests take a look at the Arctic environment and how it is changing, on land, sea, and in the air. Is there a link to global warming? And what holes remain in our understanding of how the different parts of the Arctic ecosystem interact?

We'll also talk about efforts at the state and local level to take political action regarding climate change. While legislators began debate this week in Washington on a bill that would put limits on greenhouse gas emissions, some states are already taking action on their own.

Call in with your questions and comments at 1-800-989-8255 (2-3 Eastern), and share your opinions online in our Listeners' Lounge (registration required).
