Avian Flu Vaccine / Sleep and Teens

Results from a human trial of a vaccine for avian influenza were released this week. Researchers behind the trial found that the experimental bird flu vaccine works only some of the time, and only at very high doses. So where does that leave us in the event of a pandemic? Is some protection better than none at all?

Plus, a new survey says teens aren't getting enough sleep, and are suffering the consequences. Poll results released this week by the National Sleep Foundation found that even though many sleep experts suggest teens sleep for about nine hours a night, only 20 percent of US teens follow those guidelines. Almost half of the teens surveyed got less than eight hours of shuteye. We'll talk about America's sleep habits, how much sleep is enough, and the problems of balancing busy schedules with the need for rest. Call in with your questions and comments at 1-800-989-8255 (2-3 Eastern). Teachers, find more information about using Science Friday as a classroom resource in the Kids' Connection.
