10 Years of GMOs

It's been ten years since genetically modified crops became commercially available for widespread planting in this country. Though 1994 saw FDA approval of the first commercially-available GM food, the 'FlavrSavr' tomato, it wasn't till 1996 that modified crop plants such as Monsanto's 'Roundup Ready' organisms were introduced. In this hour, we'll look at the history--and future--of GM organisms. What do we know about the safety of genetically modified plants? Advocates say ten years of planting have shown that the technology is safe. Critics say the technology is poorly regulated by a system not meant to catch potential problems.

Plus, are you ready for meat from cloned cows? It could be on the menu someday. Call in with your questions and comments at 1-800-989-8255 (2-3 Eastern). Teachers, find more information about using Science Friday as a classroom resource in the Kids' Connection.
