Freud's Drawings from Brain to Mind / Neurobiology of Dread

Freud drawing of neurons. By permission of the Estate of A W Freud et al, by arrangement with Paterson Marsh Ltd., London. Photo: Freud Museum, London.

Sigmund Freud, father of psychoanalysis, started his career as a scientist studying basic brain biology. A new exhibit of his scientific drawings shows his progression from brain to mind. In this hour, we'll explore Freud's career through his drawings, and how he went from doodling neurons on book pages to giving the world ideas such as "talk therapy," the "Oedipal complex," and the id, ego, and superego.

Special See a slideshow of images from the Freud exhibition

Plus, a look at where in the brain feelings of dread come from, and what that says about how we make unpleasant decisions. Call in with your questions and comments at 1-800-989-8255 (3-4 Eastern). Teachers, find more information about using Science Friday as a classroom resource in the Kids' Connection.
