on Earth: National Security and Climate Change
The latest international report on climate change will be released this week. This report, one in a series of documents from the IPCC, or Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, focuses on climate change mitigation. The message in the report is clear: governments must act quickly to slow warming and avoid catastrophe. There is some good news, however -- we already have the technology to curb rising carbon emissions. In this hour, we'll talk about the report and strategies to mitigate climate change, including carbon sequestration technologies.
Plus, we're used to thinking about global warming as a threat to the environment--could it also be a threat to national security? Two recent studies say the changes global warming will bring, such as drought, crop failures, and rising sea levels, could stress vulnerable nations and could lead to civil and political unrest. We'll talk with an author of one of the papers about global warming and national security. Call in with your questions and comments at 1-800-989-8255 (2-3 Eastern).
