Shark Birth / Fish Virus / Predicting Music Hits

A female bonnethead shark in an Omaha aquarium has given birth to a pup via parthenogenesis--without sperm from a male shark, that is. Researchers became interested in the birth when it occurred in a tank filled only with female sharks. DNA analysis showed that the birth did indeed take place without the presence of male sperm. This hour we'll find out how common such births are and what it might mean for shark populations. How can some species have 'virgin births?'

We'll also get an update on a deadly fish virus making its way through the Great Lakes and nearby waterways. Biologists say the virus, called viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV), could decimate fish populations. We'll look at how they plan to fight the virus, and where the money will come from.

Plus, you might think watching a few episodes of 'American Idol' qualifies you to pick the hits -- but could math help record companies score hit singles? We'll talk to the head of a company that tries to crunch the numbers to figure out which tracks on an album will top the charts. Call in with your questions and comments at 1-800-989-8255 (3-4 Eastern). Teachers, find more information about using Science Friday as a classroom resource in the Kids' Connection.
