Algae Power

NREL biotechnologist examines a flask of lipids (oils) produced by microalgae that can be converted into clean-burning biodiesel fuel Warren Gretz, NREL
With growing interest in alternative fuels, we'll check in on efforts to create truly green sources of energy -- fuel from algae. The city of Venice, Italy has announced a 2-year plan to build an algae-based power plant that would provide half the city's electric power. We'll talk about that effort, and about a library of algae samples from around the world. The Culture Collection of Algae is finding newfound interest among biofuel researchers.
