An outbreak of cholera in Haiti has killed nearly 300 people in recent days. The disease, a bacterial infection of the intestine, causes large amounts of watery diarrhea. Left untreated, death can come quickly. Haiti is not alone in its problems. Indian officials reported a smaller outbreak this week in the tea-producing region of Assam. Nigeria has seen over 1500 deaths this year due to cholera, according to UN officials. In this segment, we'll talk about the disease, its causes, and its treatment. |
