Yellow Dirt

| In the 1940s, the US Government needed uranium for its atomic weapons program. It largely found the uranium ore it needed on Navajo territory in Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona. Many mines were constructed in quest for what the Navajo called 'yellow dirt.' While the government got the ore it needed, workers in the mines and neighbors of the mining sites received significant radiation exposure. In this segment, we'll talk with Judy Pasternak, author of 'Yellow Dirt,' a new book looking at the history and environmental legacy of uranium mining on Navajo lands. |
