Internship: Fall 2019 Narrative Podcast Intern

The makers of Undiscovered are looking for an intern to join our narrative podcasting unit.

About the show: Over two seasons, Science Friday’s podcast Undiscovered brought you behind-the-scenes stories from the world of science, from science breakthroughs to science controversies. (You can listen to the show here.) For our third season, we’re shifting gears. Season three is all about science history—specifically, times when scientists got it wrong! Similar to previous seasons, episodes will feature a mix of interviews, narration, and archival sound.

Who you’d be working with: We’re a tiny team. You’ll mainly work with hosts and producers Annie Minoff and Elah Feder. You’ll also sit in on meetings with our senior editor, Christopher Intagliata. Even though you won’t work directly with the Science Friday radio show staff, we all work in the same open-concept office, so you’ll meet everyone and get a peek of what live show production looks like.

What you’d be doing: Your main job will be developing story ideas for upcoming episodes. This means pitching stories, researching potential stories that we assign to you, searching for archival sound, sleuthing out potential guests, and pre-interviewing those guests. You’ll also have a chance to at least try every aspect of podcast production: research, interviews, story development, scripting, narration, fact checking, editing audio, and everything in between. You will *not* make coffee.

What kind of experience we’re looking for: We’re looking for people with a demonstrated interest in science and nonfiction storytelling (in any medium). You should be attentive to detail, comfortable talking to strangers on the phone, curious, creative, and organized.

Bonus, but not required, assets include experience working with audio, research experience, science background, history background, and an interest in or knowledge of the international science community.

Dates: This is an 11-week internship, ideally beginning September 23 and ending December 6, 2019. (We have some wiggle room with these dates, but not much.)

Location: The Science Friday offices in midtown, NYC. This is not a remote position, though we may be able to offer some flexibility depending on your needs.

Hours/Pay: You must be able to work 24 hours/week. Pay is $15/hour.

How do I apply?

To apply, fill out this GOOGLE FORM. The form will ask you to (1) submit your resume, (2) share up to two relevant stories you’ve produced (in any medium), and (3) answer a few questions. (Keep your answers under two paragraphs.) No cover letters needed!

Application deadline is June 28, 2019 (midnight, Eastern Time). If you have questions, you can reach us at podcastintern@sciencefriday.com.

When will I know if I got it?

If you’ve been selected for an interview, we’ll contact you by July 8. We’ll select our final candidate by July 26.
