Dr. Carrie Karvonen-Gutierrez is an epidemiologist, Associate Professor at the University of Michigan (UM) School of Public Health, and Director of the UM Center for Midlife Science. As the Principal Investigator of the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation-Michigan site and other NIH-funded studies, she is renowned for her research on menopause and women’s health across the lifespan. Her work focuses on understanding the biological, social, and environmental determinants of health during the menopausal transition, examining this period as a time of significant changes that may be associated with future health outcomes including changes in body composition, physical functioning, and cardiometabolic risk. Dr. Karvonen-Gutierrez’s research leverages longitudinal cohort studies to illuminate how midlife hormonal changes intersect with factors such as race, socioeconomic status, and chronic disease to influence women’s health trajectories. Through her scholarly contributions, collaborative leadership, and dedicated mentorship, she advances the broader understanding of menopause as a critical window for changes in women’s health.
