Amy Mathers is an infectious disease physician, professor of medicine and pathology, and associate director of clinical microbiology at the University of Virginia. For more than 15 years, she directed UVA’s antimicrobial stewardship program, helping clinicians use antibiotics and other antimicrobial drugs safely, effectively, and only when needed. Her research uses genomics to understand how antibiotic resistance emerges and spreads, as well as the unintended effects antibiotics can have on patients.
