Science Friday Live In Columbia, Missouri
On Saturday, May 10, join the Science Friday team in Columbia, Missouri for a special live stage version of our radio show.
Join Science Friday as we hit the road to uncover and report on the amazing science news and stories happening in Missouri! This is your chance to peek behind the curtain of your favorite national radio show and participate in a special live performance with the experts and conversations you love.
Get a sneak peek at what we’ll be featuring on stage:
Mizzou innovation specialist Damon Coyle’s work lies at the intersection of medicine and art: his lab creates hyperrealistic body parts meant to help medical students and professionals practice for real-world surgeries and procedures. From a lifelike arm with veins that help people practice drawing blood to a set of eyeballs used for ocular trauma training, Damon will talk about how he creates these tools and demonstrate how some of them work. Get ready for a live show-and-tell (and dissect!) with his catalogue of medical trainers on stage.
And, the Missouri Botanical Garden is one of the oldest and largest research gardens in the US, housing over 6.6 million specimens. So while visitors are stopping to smell the roses, what kind of science is happening in its backrooms? Joining us are some rockstars of the plant world: Dr. Lúcia Lohmann, a world-renowned botanist and newly elected president of the garden, and Dr. Charlotte Taylor, who was recently named the most prolific living woman author of plant species. They’ll talk about what it’s like researching the most plant-rich ecosystems on Earth, how new species are classified, and the plant science that happens behind the scenes at the garden.
Plus, tackling global hunger is a big project, but Dr. Kiruba Krishnaswamy‘s FEAST Lab is focusing on the microscopic level: micronutrients. We’ll speak with Kiruba about her innovative work fortifying foods with essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients often missing from regular diets to fight hidden hunger—and wait til you see these remarkable structures at microscopic levels.
In addition, we’ll be joined by Dr. Frank Booth, who will share insights from his decades of research on the connection between body and brain health. He’ll leave us with some science-backed facts on why inactivity could be getting in the way of your long-term health. Let’s get physical (from our aisles)!
This 2-hour program features interactive moments, audience Q&A, and science demonstrations. Plus, the event will be recorded for the Science Friday radio show and podcast, so you can be a part of a future broadcast! (We’ll give attendees a head’s up when they can tune in to re-listen to their favorite moments.) Live music will be provided by Uncle Funky, a Columbia-based band.
