Undiscovered is a new narrative podcast from the makers of Science Friday, and we’re looking for a production intern!
About the show: On Undiscovered, we tell stories about how science happens—the people who do it, why they do it, and the sometimes thorny questions their science poses. Ideally, every episode includes cool science, interesting characters, action (things happen!), and a bigger point or question (why does this matter?). Our episodes are documentary-style, featuring a mix of interviews, narration, music, and archival sound. We have a very special place in our hearts for science history. Check out our first season here.
Who you’d be working with: We’re a tiny team. You’ll mainly work with Annie Minoff and Elah Feder, the hosts and producers of Undiscovered. You’ll also sit in on meetings with our senior editor, Christopher Intagliata. You won’t work directly with the Science Friday radio production team, but Undiscovered works in the same open-concept office, so you’ll meet the SciFri production staff and get a peek of what live show production looks like.
What you’d be doing: Your primary task would be generating and developing story ideas for Undiscovered Season 3. This means pitching stories, researching potential stories that we assign to you, searching for archival sound, sleuthing out potential guests, and pre-interviewing those guests. You might even develop a narrative structure for a new episode! We may also enlist your help fine-tuning some episodes on season 2. You will *not* make coffee.
What kind of experience we’re looking for: We’re looking for folks with a demonstrated interest in science and/or nonfiction storytelling (in any medium). You should be comfortable talking to strangers on the phone, attentive to detail, curious, creative, and organized.
Bonus but not required assets include experience working with audio, research experience, science background, history background, and an interest in or knowledge of the international science community.
Dates: This is a 12-week internship, ideally beginning the week of September 24 and ending the week of December 14, 2018. (We have some wiggle room with these dates, but not much.)
Location: Undiscovered’s midtown office in NYC. (We’re located within the Science Friday offices.) This is not a remote position, though we may be able to offer some flexibility here depending on your needs.
Hours/Pay: You must be able to work 25 hours/week. Pay is $13/hour.
How do I apply?
To apply, fill out this GOOGLE FORM. The form will ask you to (1) submit your resume, (2) share up to two relevant stories you’ve produced (in any medium), and (3) answer a few questions. (Keep your answers under two paragraphs). No cover letters needed!
Application deadline is June 30, 2018 (midnight, Eastern Time). If you have questions, you can reach us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
When will I know if I got it?
If you’ve been selected for an interview, we’ll contact you by July 5th. We’ll select our final candidate by July 24.
