Science Goes To The Movies: ‘Gattaca’ In Princeton, NJ

Science Friday is taking our radio series Science Goes To The Movies to movie theaters around the country to reveal the science behind some of our favorite films! This time, we’re teaming up with the Princeton Garden Theatre to present Gattaca, the 1997 sci-fi thriller about genetic modification, the human spirit, and what it means to be “valid.”
Following the film, we’ll host a live conversation with local experts ready to explore the science, genomics, and technology from the movie.
Meet The Experts
- Sarah Kocher is an Assistant Professor at Princeton University in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics. She received her Ph.D. in Genetics from North Carolina State University, where she studied behavioral ecology and quantitative genetics. Her lab’s research bridges the gap between population and evolutionary genetics, neurobiology, and behavior.
- Elizabeth Harman is a Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Philosophy and Human Values at Princeton University. She has written about the ethics of abortion, what we owe to animals, actions that are above and beyond the call of duty, how we should act in the face of moral uncertainty, and the blameworthiness of agents who are caught in the grip of false moral views. Her papers have appeared in such journals as Ethics, Philosophy and Public Affairs, and Oxford Studies in Metaethics. She is co-editor of Norton Introduction to Philosophy, Second Edition (2018), and Norton Introduction to Ethics (2021).
