Discoveries In The Deep Oceans
Join SciFri as we explore the mysteries of the deep ocean with celebrations, ship-to-shore science missions, and fun design challenges.
This month Science Friday Educate is on a mission of discovery as we celebrate the oceans and the amazing organisms that live in their watery depths. Start by planning the perfect ocean-themed cephalo-party with videos, books, ink-credible STEM activities, and amazing coloring pages. Then join us during Cephalopod Week, on June 27, for the opportunity to talk LIVE with ocean scientists studying the ocean floor. Then, take everything you’re learning and put it toward our engineering design challenge. Finish up by sharing your invention with all the other brilliant learners in the community! Ready for some seriously seaworthy science? Excellent!

🎨 Take the Science Coloring Challenge: The Cephalopod Of The Day Science Coloring Challenge newsletter is about the ways that both science and art draw from similar principles of observation. Every day for a week, you’ll get one cephalopod science story paired with an optional creative coloring challenge that will help you deeply observe the animal’s look and behavior. Our oceans cover more than 70% of the planet. They help regulate our climate and weather patterns, produce nearly half of the world’s oxygen, supply a surprising variety of food (much more than just fish), and even provide medicinal products to fight cancer, Arthritis, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Also, 76% of all U.S. trade relies on marine transportation, with $282 billion in goods and services dependent on the oceans. Our oceans are vitally important to every person on the planet.
And yet, we’ve barely explored these vast underwater territories! More than 80% of the ocean is still unexplored because it’s difficult and expensive work. As a result, scientists estimate 91% of ocean species have yet to be found and classified.
No wonder our oceans capture our sense of adventure and spark our curiosity!
For over 10 years, Science Friday has hosted Cephalopod Week, and along the way, we’ve partnered with science centers, museums, local radio stations, aquariums, and amazing gathering spaces to highlight these eight-armed creatures and the outstanding, octopus-obsessed people who study and care for them. Love what we do? Become part of our Sea of Support!
